FORENSIC MEDICINE
HISTORY
The Department of Forensic Medicine, Govt. General Hospital, Kozhikode was established in 1957. The Department is within the main hospital building, adjacent to the Mortuary. Started from a modest beginning, the department is one of the time tested centre of excellence in Kerala providing Medico legal services. The Department of Forensic Medicine started conducting Medico legal autopsy in the year 1957.
It has a Mortuary with three cold chambers for preserving dead bodies. The autopsy room is equipped with one autopsy table. The official working hours of the department is from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.
The department received special mention and appreciation as the best maintained Department of Forensic Medicine in the Kayakalp awards of 2023, where the hospital also received first prize.

2. Other medico legal advices regarding wound examination, potency examination, examination of injuries of sexual assault, Age determination, examination of accused in sex offences, medico legal autopsy etc.
3. Panellist in District Medical negligence Board.
4. Providing expert opinion in various cases in the jurisdiction.
5. Age estimation to inhabitants of poor home under calicut district administration.
6. Age estimation to participants in International, National and State level games and athletics.
ACADEMICS
1. Three months compulsory internship under the district residency programme for junior residents in Forensic Medicine.
2. One week internship programme for MBBS graduates under CRMI.
3. Internship programme for Forensic science graduates.
4. Internship programme for law students.
5. Awareness programmes for adoloscents.
6. Medico legal training for medical officers.
